Cotgrave Advice Centre was set up by the Rector of All Saints’ Church during the miners’ strike in 1984. Since then Cotgrave has changed dramatically, the coal mine closed in 1993 and was replaced by a Country Park and some light industry. New housing has also built on the old pit head site. Also Cotgrave now has a swimming pool, community centre, golf courses, a new primary school of national repute and a new “hub” incorporating the medical centre, library, police and chemists. Plans are in hand to provide the village with a good mixture of shops and commercial businesses to serve the residents.
During these years of change the Advice Centre has continued to be needed and has been growing with the community it serves and now gives comprehensive, professional, free advice in many specialist areas, majoring on debt, welfare benefits, income tax, form filling and general advice. We also have a Solicitor visiting once a month.
Appointments are not required for most of our services – just drop in, but we like to make advance bookings for the Solicitor.
We welcome people from all over Rushcliffe area and now advise about 80 clients a month.
We are aware that in future many benefits will need to be claimed for on-line rather than using paper forms and we are hoping to make IT systems available for our clients to use at weekends if needed.
The Cotgrave Advice Centre is staffed and managed entirely by volunteers. Our staff are trained for their roles by attending courses and by partnering experienced volunteers.
Cotgrave Advice Centre is funded in part by a grant from Nottinghamshire County Council and in part by periodic donations made to it by a local charity that does not want to be publicly named here. The advice centre is very grateful for this support and thanks its benefactors.
Cotgrave Advice Centre is affiliated to the Advice UK co-coordinating body for independent advice providers in the UK. Below are the membership certificate and debt licence, issued by Advice UK, under which Cotgrave Advice Centre operates.
